Sugar and the Attention Deficit Disaster |
For one week the children, and their parents were asked not to eat or drink foods containing added sugar or additives. The children were also asked to eat more fish and put seeds on their morning cereal. Seeds and fish are good sources of essential fats. In addition, they were given an Optio, a fruit juice drink with added vitamins. |
Four out of the 12 children showed a dramatic improvement in behaviour, concentration and literacy skills. One of the children, who had real problems with concentrating, sitting still, reading and writing at the beginning of the week had gone through a Jekyll and Hyde transformation by the end of the week. His mother was amazed at the improvement and said that her son was much calmer and didn’t get as over-excited as he used to. His reading and writing also improved dramatically. |
The conventional treatment for these children is to prescribe stimulant drugs that have a frightening list of side effects. These stimulant drugs, which work in the brain similar to slow-acting cocaine, are becoming drugs of abuse in the US, where kids crush them and snort them. Children who respond are usually adrenally exhausted – burnt out on sugar, stress and stimulants such as caffeine, which is added into most children's drinks. If you take them off all sugar and additives, and give them essential fats and vitamins, they feel, learn and behave better. This is more effective than drugs, and much, much safer. |
It is time we stopped dosing our kids up on drugs without investigating the causes of their problems. The sweets available to kids (with hundreds of e-numbers including the orange colouring tartrazine, which was linked to hyperactivity more than two decades ago) are affecting their brains, their learning ability and their socialisation. It also doesn't help that sugar is added to so many other foods (baked beans, convenience foods, 'kids' meals etc) as well. You can read more about the detrimental effects of sugar on all aspects of our health on Dr. Mercola’s website at: http://www.mercola.com/article/sugar/dangers_of_sugar.htm There is also a book called 'Sugar Blues' by William Dufty which tells of his experiences growing up and as a young man being a sugar junkie and not even realising it. His intake of sugar came from many different sources and his health was a complete mess - acne, energy problems, nerve problems etc etc. When he finally worked out that sugar was the cause of all his misery, he had already spent a lot of time in and out of hospital and been on more drugs than he cares to mention. When the penny did finally drop and he decided to go 'cold turkey' he likens sugar to heroine: 'After all, heroin is nothing but a chemical. They take the juice of the poppy and they refine it into opium and then they refine it to morphine and finally to heroine. Sugar is nothing but a chemical. They take the juice of the cane or the beet and they refine it to molasses and then they refine it to brown sugar and finally to strange white crystals.' |

Scary sugar statistics ... |
In 1821 sugar consumption in America was around 10lbs per person per year. |
In 1970, this figure was 120lbs per person per year |
In 1994, Americans consumed on average 150lbs of sugar per person |
1997 it went up to a staggering 170lbs, and in 2002, this figure rose again to about 190lbs per person per year!!! To put this in perspective, 140lbs is 10 stone. 190lbs is 13.5 stone - the size of an above average man. This is how much sugar one person eats in a year. The statistics are based on Americans but you can bet we are not far behind them. |
Consumption of refined sugar causes severe nutritional deficiencies, especially of B-vitamins (involved in nervous health, digestion and many other bodily functions). It can also severely suppress the immune system. Eating just 100 grams of carbohydrates in the form of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey or orange juice can significantly depress white blood cell activity. White blood cells form a major part of the immune system so, given the huge amount of sugar consumed in the west, we must come to the conclusion that most people in the US and the UK have chronically depressed immune function. This has huge implications for our day-to-day lives. If we all stopped eating sugar perhaps many of these modern diseases would decline and cancer rates would drop!! Who knows, but it is clear that too much sugar is not good for us. That being said, we should be able to enjoy things in moderation and sugar is no exception. Many people however, on giving up sugar, don't feel the need to eat it at all. Once the taste and the cravings are gone, it really is not an issue anymore. |
PS The World Health Organisation recently recommended that we should reduce our sugar consumption to 10% of our diet. This was met with outrage by the Sugar Industry who said that their research had shown that 25% was safe. Guess who funded their research? The sugar manufacturers themselves, of course, so it was bound to be unbiased??? |

Importance of Chewing |
Studies show we obtain fewer calories and nutrients from soft food than from crunchy food, which we have to chew. Unchewed food is hard or impossible to digest, so its calories and micro-nutrients pass through our systems. The less we chew fruits and vegetables, the less their micro-nutrients are released for absorption. |

Child Diabetes on the Rise |
Britain is facing an epidemic of diabetes among children and teenagers within a decade because of soaring rates of obesity and lack of exercise. Medical experts warn that poor nutrition in the first few years of life, low levels of physical activity and genetic factors are combining to leave a generation with unprecedented health problems. |
Heart Disease and a Mediterranean Diet |
A traditional Mediterranean diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and olive oil can cut premature deaths by up to 25%. The main benefit of the diet, which is rich in complex carbohydrates and so called “healthy fats”, is that it significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, scientists have said. |
