Living to 120 - our genetic potential
Are you well and brimming with health and energy? If you are under 120 years old, you should
be! Your genetic potential is 120 – 140
years but to achieve that your body requires a minimum of 91 nutrients every day
to stay healthy.
Today, anyone who dies
before they are 120 has not died of “old age” but of mineral deficiencies. When you feel tired, more stressed than you
expect to be, ill for long periods of time, or generally run down, it’s your
body’s way of reminding you that you do not have enough vitamins and minerals
in your diet. Virtually every known
disease can be traced back to a mineral deficiency.
So, how do you keep
your body healthy? Eat some fruit? Have some vegetables with dinner? Not good enough – the vitamins and minerals
are simply no longer in the food we eat.
Due to constant over-farming, minerals are not in the farmlands that
produce our food. Plants cannot produce
minerals themselves so if the minerals are not in the soil in the first place
and the plants are not producing them, it follows that any food grown in the
land will be seriously deficient. This
has been known about for years.
“The alarming fact
is that foods (fruits, vegetables and grains) now being raised on millions of
acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals are starving us
- no matter how much of them we eat. No
man today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the
minerals he requires for perfect health because his stomach isn't big enough to
hold them” Senate Document No. 264, 1936.
That statement was
made in the US Senate over 68 years ago!
“Soil depletion levels of minerals in Europe now at 72%,
over the last 100 years” 1992 Earth Summit
Report.
More than a decade on
and things are no better.
The 91 nutrients you
require comprise of 60 essential and trace minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 essential
amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids.
How many are you getting?
Maybe you take mineral
and vitamin supplements. These may
help, but too much of one and not enough of another can put your body out of
balance and do more harm than good.
Also many of the supplements in tablet form have been found in their
thousands, fully intact down the sewers.
Unless hundreds of people have poured their tablets down the toilet,
those thousands of supplements must have got there by passing undigested
through the gastro-intestinal systems of humans!
Our bodies are
designed to absorb nutrients in microscopic form. Plants do this for us by breaking down the minerals from the soil
and turning them into a micro-colloidal state.
Therefore, if our food has been depleted of the minerals due to
intensive farming techniques and overuse of pesticides, we need to find a
micro-colloidal supplement of all the essential nutrients to make up the
shortfall.
There are still
cultures around the world, today, who routinely reach their 120th
birthday in good health, without the aid of supplements, eg. the Tibetans of
Western China, the Hunzas of Eastern Pakistan, the Titikakas of Eastern Peru,
the Armenians and Ajerbaijanis. The
January 1973 edition of the National Geographic magazine featured an article on
longevity and pictured a lady celebrating her birthday at a party. She was 136. The article also featured an Armenian tea picker, still working in
the tea fields at 167!
The reason these
people have no need for nutritional supplements is because their food contains
all that is required for optimum health.
They also drink from mineral rich streams; they breathe in unpolluted
air both inside and outside their homes; and they do not use toxic chemicals
for cleaning their bodies or their homes, therefore reducing free radical
damage. It is so different to our
lifestyles in more “civilised” (?) countries.
But, if you would like
to live to a ripe old age in good health, but don’t fancy moving to the regions
mentioned above, you still can.
Here’s how:
1) Reduce
your chemical load by using non-toxic toiletries and household cleaning products
(see www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/UKStore
or www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/EuroStore
for safe alternatives).
2) Drink
at least 8 glasses (2 litres) of pure, non-fluoridated water, daily (see www.npwa.freeserve.co.uk to see what fluoride does to your body).
3) Perform
fairly vigorous exercise for 30 minutes at least three times a week.
4) Do
not smoke, and avoid passive smoking.
5) Drink
no more than 14 units of alcohol (women) and 21 units (men) a week and never
more than 3 units in one day. One unit = a small glass of wine, ½ pint
beer/cider or 1 pub measure of spirits.
6) Avoid
food containing Hydrogenated fat and Vegetable oils, except Olive oil (Extra
Virgin is best). Saturated fat as in
butter, cream, meat and coconut oil is actually better for you, contrary to the
misguided beliefs of some doctors! (see http://www.mercola.com/2002/aug/17/saturated_fat1.htm)
7) Eat
at least 5, but preferably 8 portions of fruit and vegetables daily (organic is
best). Fruit is ideal at breakfast or
between meals – avoid eating fruit as part of a main meal (See “Food for
Thought” by Phillip Day at www.credence.org)
8) Take
a micro-colloidal vitamin and mineral supplement each day, preferably in liquid
form for best absorption, to make up the shortfall in nutrients. Within 3 months, people report benefits such
as less aches and pains, increased energy, improved sleep, significantly less
colds, and stronger nails and hair.
9)
Take an anti-oxidant
formula to combat free radical damage.
Every day, the body is attacked by ‘free radicals’. They are unstable particles that cause
damage to the body’s cells. An adequate
intake of powerful anti-oxidants can help prevent free radical damage, keep
your body healthy, prevent the onset of disease and even work towards reversing
disease.
10)
Eat oily fish such as
salmon, tuna, herring, or mackerel at least once a week to obtain Omega 3
essential fatty acids for optimum functioning of the cells. If you are unable to eat fish, a fish oil
supplement is necessary to prevent heart disease, joint problems, sterility and
Alzheimer’s.
See www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/UKStore/Dailyessentials.html
or www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/EuroStore/Dailyessentials.html for information on vitamin and mineral
supplements, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids.

minerals, anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids, see December’s Special
Offers.

COLITIS: Aloe vera can
ease symptoms
Ulcerative colitis is one of those intractable conditions for which medicine
has few answers. As a result up to half
of all sufferers seek alternative treatment.
The most popular remedy is aloe vera gel, and with good reason, a new
study has discovered.
In a test with 44 patients with mild to moderate
ulcerative colitis, half were given 100 ml aloe vera gel daily and the rest had
a placebo for four weeks. Remission
occurred in 30 per cent of the aloe vera group compared with just 7 per cent of
the placebo group. In addition, 17 per
cent of the aloe vera group also reported an improvement in their
condition. Adverse reactions were
minimal, and similar in both groups.
While earlier studies have confirmed aloe vera's
inflammatory qualities, this is the first study to prove that it is an
effective treatment for ulcerative colitis.

Sunlight
Helps Babies Sleep at Night
British researchers have found a
new use for sunlight: A natural sleep aid for babies. Infants who were exposed
to twice as much light between noon and 4pm became better sleepers. And those
who slept well at six weeks were likely to be good sleepers at 12 weeks.
The possible explanation for the
link between light exposure and sleep: Higher light levels encourage the early
development of the biological clock, which regulates a number of bodily
functions, including the secretion of melatonin, an important factor in
well-balanced sleeping patterns.
Parents taking part in the study
were asked to maintain their usual routines while a light monitor was attached
to their baby's cot. After a review of diary entries, babies cried nearly twice
as much at six weeks than they did at 12 weeks, leaving researchers to
conclude that spending plenty of time
in daylight encourages infants to sleep at night.

Brain Tissue
May Waste Away in Obese Women
A Swedish study has found that
women who have been obese throughout their lives are more likely to lose brain
tissue in their temporal lobe, making them increasingly more prone to
Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline compared to females of normal weight.
The only significant relationship
between body mass index (BMI) and brain atrophy was found in the temporal lobe,
scientists said. A higher BMI accounted for about 8 percent of all
dementia. Although scientists don't
know if this brain atrophy applies to men or if the effect can be modified by
losing weight, this discovery fits with previous research that showed how BMI
correlates with Alzheimer's disease.

Cranberries
Can Prevent Tooth Decay
Most people know that cranberries
are frequently used for urinary tract infections in women. We believe that this
may work by a sugar in the cranberries, called mannose, that serves to prevent
the bacteria from attaching to the lining of the bladder. Similarly, new
research shows that cranberries might also be useful to prevent dental decay by
the same mechanism.
Additionally, as we approach
Christmas, it is important to remember that cranberries are chock full of
antioxidants that have many other health benefits. Many cranberry containing
products though are loaded with sugar, so just be sure to keep the consumption
of sugar very low when consuming cranberries.

At Healthy Choices, we frequently
come across websites which we believe you may find interesting and useful. Here are 3 sites:
Skin Care for the Newborn
http://www.sharontrotter.org.uk
Sharon
Trotter is an experienced midwife and breast feeding consultant who has written
a number of articles on skin care and breast feeding for health journals. She
has helped to introduce guidelines in many hospitals in the UK, based on
research, recommending that new babies are cleaned only with water in the first
few weeks of life to prevent damage to their skin from the harsh detergents
used in baby care products. This is an
issue which Healthy Choices has been attempting to inform new parents about for
many years, as we know full well the potential harm that these products can
do. Unfortunately, as many are included
in the free gift packs handed out in hospitals, mothers can be too keen to use
them straight away, possibly risking eczema and other immune system disorders
on their young babies. Sharon’s website has valuable information about her
research and if you know anyone who is expecting a baby, please pass this web
address on to them.
Health Defence
has been put together by Dr Paul Clayton who has many years experience in nutrition.
He now trains doctors and other health practitioners in nutrition and has
written many publications on the subject.
His book, also called Health Defence, is highly
recommended for anyone who is interested in understanding nutrition, why we
need certain nutrients and why so many of us suffer from degenerative disease.
If you have read our main article on longevity, you will be interested to know
that Dr Clayton also believes our genetic potential is around 120 years.
Green Choices
If you saw the “Tonight with Trevor McDonald”
programme (Friday 3rd Dec, ITV) about a family who were encouraged
to become environmentally-friendly for a week, you will find this website a
helpful guide to discover different ways of becoming a “green” family,
yourself. This site offers advice and
guidance on many aspects of life, some of which you may have never considered
before.
There
will be more sites listed next month.
If you have come across any websites which you feel would be of benefit
to subscribers of Healthy Choices E-News, please e-mail healthychoices@ecoworld.co.uk
with the details and we’ll check them out for future issues.
