Hay Fever- Tips to reduce the misery
If you
suffer from hay fever, this time of year can be really miserable but you are not
alone. It is estimated that up to
25% of the population suffers from hay fever, although the name “hay fever” is
actually incorrect. The condition
is caused by weeds that pollinate during the hay-mowing season, but not by the
hay itself. Ragweed pollen accounts
for about 75% of hay fever cases. The medical term is “allergic rhinitis” and
some people suffer this condition at other times of the year if they are
allergic to other pollens from trees or from mould spores.
The
common symptoms are:
·
a runny
nose
·
an itchy
nose
·
sneezing
·
a blocked
nose
·
watery,
itchy eyes
These
symptoms are not life threatening but as hay fever is caused by an allergic
reaction to pollens, it indicates that the immune system is over-reacting to
histamine, a chemical that the body releases to fight invaders such as bacteria
and viruses. This is why some of
the symptoms are similar to having a cold and also why medical treatments often
include drugs called “anti-histamines” to reduce the
symptoms.
If you
would like to reduce your symptoms, there are a number of things which may help
before turning to medication.
Stay
indoors – this
may be a bit drastic but on days when the pollen count is high, staying indoors
with the windows and doors shut should reduce your exposure to pollen. If you have the luxury of
air-conditioning this should be easier to do. A good quality air filter may also
help. If you must go out, the worst
times are first thing in the morning and early evening when plants release
pollen into the air.
Dry your
clothes indoors –
hanging your clothes outside to dry will allow pollen to stick to the clothes
and may cause a reaction later when you wear them. If drying indoors is a problem, then
avoid hanging them outside in the early morning and evening when there is more
pollen in the air.
Cool compress for eyes - if you have sore, red eyes, lie down for 20 minutes with a cool compress over your eyes made from cotton pads soaked in rosewater, eyebright or cold chamomile tea.
Aromatherapy - try steam
inhalations containing a few drops of essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint,
lavender or pine to clear congestion. All available from www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/UKStore/Aromatherapy.html.
Herbal
remedies – a
number of herbs have been found to help sufferers of hay fever. The following may reduce symptoms but
should not be regarded as medical advice.
Homeopathy – a bit
late for this year but worth bearing in mind for next. A homeopath may recommend
homeopathically potentised pollens taken daily before the hay
fever season begins as a kind of inoculation. In a study in the Lancet in
1986, Dr. David Reilly and his team at the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital found a
preparation of mixed grass pollens effective in treating hay fever.
If you
find that your symptoms require something more potent, then medication from your
doctor or pharmacist may be your only option. Today, many of the drugs now
available to treat hay fever are less likely to cause drowsiness, than those
available a few years ago. They are mainly anti-histamines, cortico-steroids
applied topically as a nasal spray, eye drops and decongestants. Taken on a short-term basis during the
hay fever season, these medicines are unlikely to cause harm to
health.

Aspirin,
not quite the wonder drug
Aspirin may cause a form of asthma
that could affectup to 21% of all those who regularly take it or any other NSAID
(Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), according to a review of 66 reports in
the literature – some of which go back as far as 1964

Quit
Smoking Before Age 35 to Regain Health
Smokers
who quit before the age of 35 have a reasonable chance to regain their health
over time and to live as long and as well as people who have never smoked. The
researchers who performed the analysis said that smokers who quit can dodge the
debilitating effects of smoking-related diseases and maintain a high quality of
life into middle-age and beyond. Former smokers, both male and female, who
reported having quit for 15 years or more had no statistically significant
difference in years of remaining life or years of healthy life when compared to
those who reported never having smoked at all. So not only is it better to quit
sooner than later, but also, if one decides to stop smoking the best route is
cold turkey and not gradual reduction.

"Yo-Yo"
Dieting Weakens Your Immune System
Yo-yo
dieting, in which a person repeatedly loses and regains weight, may have a
lasting negative impact on immune function. Conversely, maintaining the same
weight over time appears to have a positive effect on the immune system. It
appears that long-term immune function decreases in proportion to how many times
a woman intentionally loses weight, while immune function, as measured by
natural-killer-cell activity, was higher among women who had been fairly weight
stable over several years. So while it's still important to lose weight if
you're overweight or obese, it is also important not to regain the weight you
lose.

Antibiotics linked to
cancer?
The Journal of the American Medical
Association (Feb 18, 2004; 291:827-35) has reported a recent study of 10,000
women. Those who took antibiotics for more than 500 days in a 17 year period
held more than twice the risk of breast cancer as women who had taken none.
Women who had taken just one dose of antibiotics, statistically increased their
risk by 1.5 times.
The study was only recorded for
breast cancer but obviously it would be interesting for men and prostate, and
for other cancers. The likely explanation might involve the action of
antibiotics in destroying good bacteria in the stomach. (In my e-newsletter we
have mentioned that good bacteria keep Helicobacter pylori in check. The
bacterium is linked to lowered levels of B-12 in the blood). It could also be
simply a case of women who get more infections have weaker immune systems and
may be more prone to cancer.
The study followed up on original
findings in Finland in 2000 where the?first connection was
made.

At
Healthy Choices, we frequently come across websites which provide
good quality information about a number of health issues. Here are 3 sites which you may find
interesting.
We have mentioned this website before but it now contains much more information on cancer, how to manage it and even avoid it. Chris Woollams, the founder of Icon magazine and the CANCERactive charity is currently giving talks around the UK and Ireland. Dates and venues for his talks can be found on this website.

In May, the Guardian newspaper published three detailed reports on toxins in cosmetics, personal care products, household cleaning products and food. It mentioned many of the chemicals we have been warning you about since Healthy Choices was set up 2 years ago. If you still need convincing that products you use everyday may be doing you and your family harm, then these reports, now available online, should help you.
Tree Hugger Mums

This website is for parents who wish to bring
up their children in a safe, eco-friendly way. It contains information and
articles on all aspects of parenting from pre-conception to breastfeeding plus
information about using cloth nappies instead of environment-damaging
disposables. Take a look at how cloth nappies have changed - you'll be
amazed!
There
will be more sites listed next month.
If you have come across any websites which you feel would be of benefit
to subscribers of Healthy Choices E-News, please e-mail healthychoices@ecoworld.co.uk

One very simple way to avoid this situation is to start an Alternative Pension Plan with NEWAYS. By transferring your spending on products you would normally buy for the home, car and family to NEWAYS toxin-free, eco-friendly alternatives, you could end up with a potential monthly income of over £15,000 in just 15 years. This is based on a transfer spend of £124 a month. A conventional pension plan, investing the same amount of money over the same period of time would give you around £250 a month. All that you are required to do with the NEWAYS Alternative Plan is to recommend the products to just 4 other people over the next 6 years who then do the same as you.
How many
pension plans have you come across which actually give you
products that keep you healthy each month, and help prevent cancer
and protect the environment, in return for your
investment?
For more
detailed information on the NEWAYS Alternative Plan and a rundown of the figures
calculated by independent financial advisors, click on the following link: www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Pension_Plan.html
