Launch of Family Care Website

In addition to our Healthy Choices website, we have just launched a special website for the family at www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Familycare. It provides specific information on planning a pregnancy, pregnancy and post-natal care, ADHD and other health issues relevant to families and their needs.  More articles will be added in time and although some of the pages are similar on both sites, each website will be promoted separately to the appropriate groups of people.

Please take a look at Family Care, when you get a chance, as we would appreciate any comments or suggestions, both good and bad.

Both websites link to our Online Store which now has a secure credit card payment method, using Paypal.  There is also a Euro Store for those of you living in the Eurozone, so please let friends and family know where they can purchase safe, toxin-free products to reduce their risk of cancer.

We have had some great contact with people from all over the world who have somehow found our website.  This has been surprising as we have not yet submitted the sites to search engines.  It appears that Google have found us, independently, and the Healthy Choices website is coming up quite high with certain keywords in Google searches.  We really appreciate the opportunities that this is creating, as a great deal of time and effort has gone into building these websites.

Personally, I would like to thank all of you who have helped and encouraged me to keep going, with your comments, ideas and support.  I would especially like to thank my long-suffering family who have had meals served up late, clothes not always washed on time and hearing me babble on about hypertext mark-up language and javascript for many months!

But I especially want to thank God.  I thank Him for showing me the truth and for giving me the desire to warn people about the unnecessary risks to their health that they face each day.  And, true to form, He has provided us with the most wonderful gifts in nature to help us prevent and defeat many of the degenerative diseases that our 21st Century lifestyles cause.

My experiences as a nurse have made me determined never to get cancer, and I never want you or your family to get it either. If you haven’t yet thrown out all the toxic products from your home, please think very hard about doing so, especially if you have children.  And if you think I am just scaremongering, take another look at the independent articles and links in www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Familycare/Common_Toxins.html .

Please do not keep this to yourself.  Surely your friends and family deserve the chance to read this information, too.

ORAC Foods in the Fight Against Cancer and Heart Disease

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. This is a scientific way of asking “How well does a certain food help my body fight disorders like cancer and heart disease?”

Oxidation and oxygen radicals are well-known and documented; this process leads to cell damage. Prevention or limitation of this damage will improve health and has led to increased sales of antioxidant food supplements.

The public is becoming more aware of foods which are naturally high in antioxidants. These fruits and vegetables are promoted by numerous agencies and organisations. ORAC scores are used by nutritionists to identify which foods offer a higher capacity to absorb free radicals; the more oxygen a food can absorb, the higher the ORAC score. The use of ORAC scores easily identifies which foods are better at fighting cancer, heart disease, etc.

The animal studies indicate that eating plenty of high-ORAC foods:

v      raises the antioxidant power of human blood 10 to 25 per cent;

v      prevents some loss of long-term memory and assisted learning ability in middle-aged rats;

v      maintains the ability of brain cells in middle-aged rats to respond to a chemical stimulus - a function that normally decreases with age;

v      protects rats’ tiny blood vessel capillaries against oxygen damage.

Nutritionist Ronald L. Prior contends, “If we can show some relationship between ORAC intake and health outcome in people, I think we may reach a point where the ORAC value will become a new standard for good antioxidant protection.”

Can foods slow down ageing?

Studies on ageing at the United States Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Research Centre at Tufts University in Boston, suggest that consuming fruits and vegetables with high ORAC values may help slow the ageing process in both the body and the brain. ORAC measures the ability of foods, blood plasma and just about anything to subdue oxygen free radicals in test conditions.

These results have prompted speculation that the ORAC measure may help define the dietary requirements needed to help prevent tissue damage. It has been suggested for many years that damage by oxygen free radicals is behind many conditions associated with ageing, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Firm evidence supports the theory that a high intake of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of cancer and a low intake raises risk. Recent evidence suggests that reduced brain function associated with ageing and other disorders like Alzheimer’s may be due to increased vulnerability to free radicals.

Such evidence has prompted increasing sales in antioxidant food supplements in recent years, but several large studies involving individual antioxidants have had mixed results. It may be that combinations of nutrients in foods have a greater effect than each nutrient taken alone. The ORAC value covers all antioxidants in foods and can be used to identify which foods offer a higher potential for antioxidant capability.

Antioxidants and Blood

Several laboratories have reported that individual plant-derived antioxidants (flavonoids) are thought to have protective powers. Approximately 4000 flavonoids have been identified. They constitute a major class of antioxidants and appear to be responsible for the major part of fruit and vegetable power. Scientists have found evidence that food antioxidants are not only absorbed but actually boost the antioxidant power of the blood.

A study involving 36 men and women aged 20 to 80 was conducted, with the participants doubling their daily fruit and vegetable intake. The average quantity of fruit or vegetable portions was increased from five to ten a day and the relative ORAC daily units calculated.

The daily ORAC consumption was raised from 1,670 to between 3,300 and 3,500 - approximately double the previous score. Blood analysis indicated a 13 to 15 per cent rise in blood plasma ORAC scores. This study supports a preliminary study, which showed a 25 per cent rise in serum ORAC after eight women were given test meals made from high ORAC foods, red wine or vitamin C. Red wine was used as it tests high for ORAC and has been linked with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The noted increase on blood serum values cannot be completely associated with vitamin C, vitamin E or other carotenoids. The body must be absorbing a range of components found in these fruits and vegetables. The antioxidant capacity of blood is not unlimited, but a significant increase of between 15 to 20 per cent can be achieved.

The power of antioxidants

Neways International (UK) Ltd commissioned an independent laboratory in the UK to test a number of Neways’ supplements for comparison with fruit and vegetables. Cascading Revenol was found to be 150 times more powerful than the best antioxidant fruit, blueberries, with Revenol being 33 times more powerful than the same fruit.

The results of the testing have even more surprising conclusions. Cascading Revenol is 450 times a stronger antioxidant than both oranges and red grapes.

You are what you eat

The ORAC values of different foods is so wide that selecting the right foods is vitally important. For example, choosing six foods with lower values could provide less ORAC units than a single food with a high score. Studies have yielded even more support for high ORAC diets. High ORAC diets have been linked to the protection of nerve cells within the brain against effects of ageing. Researchers have concluded that motor and memory loss cannot be prevented completely but high ORAC diets help prevention and management of these age-related conditions.

What does this mean for you?

The latest guidelines from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) advises that everyone should consume at least five portions (one portion = 80g) of fruit and vegetables a day.  Interestingly, in France where the incidence of cancer and heart disease is much lower than in the UK, the recommendations for fruit and vegetables are ten portions a day.

A High ORAC diet could consist of:

Breakfast :

Strawberries (40g); ORAC Rating: 700

Kiwi (40g); ORAC Rating: 260

Lunch:

Stuffed pepper (80g); ORAC Rating: 640

Small orange (80g); ORAC Rating: 680

Dinner: Main meal complemented by two servings of vegetables -

Broccoli; ORAC Rating: 760

Cauliflower; ORAC Rating: 360

Total daily ORAC value is therefore 3400. The average daily score for a normal diet would be about 2000 units.

The aim of a high ORAC diet would be to achieve a daily intake between 3300 and 3500 units. Supplementing a diet with one Revenol and one Cascading Revenol a day will provide a total of 4028 ORAC units. Coupled with a healthy diet this ensures that the recommended ORAC intake is not only achieved, but is considerably enhanced, with an estimated total of 7500 ORAC units.

Health Bites

Eat your raspberries
Ellagic acid has been found to slow down the growth of abnormal colon cells.  It also has antibacterial and anti-viral properties, increases the rate of metabolism of carcinogens and prevents the development of cancer cells.  As a powerful antioxidant, it neutralises the affects of aflatoxins produced by parasites within the body which may cause cancer.

Ellagic acid is found in 46 different fruits and nuts such as raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, walnuts, and pecans.  It is also a constituent of Maximol Solutions, Neways multi-vitamin and mineral tonic.

X-Rays of the head may cause harm to children

A Swedish research report claims that children who have x-rays of their head or a CT scan following a head injury, can suffer intellectual impairment.

A team from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, working with teams from Harvard and Athens, followed more than 3000 children who had had radiation treatment.  Children who had the highest doses of radiation were only half as likely to achieve a place in high school as the norm, and scored less well on IQ tests.

Researchers concluded that Computed Tomography scans (CT scans) and their use on the brain needed to be reviewed.

Cigarettes: Cutting down doesn’t cut out

Researchers reporting in Nature (22 January 2004) conclude that cutting down on smoking is no way to prevent cancer.  Although the study only followed 100 people, urine samples were taken from participants and these showed little decline in cancer causing agents despite cutbacks of 75% by some smokers.

The only answer is to totally quit.  See January 2004’s E-News for other good reasons to quit, at www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/E-News2004/Jan04.html

Prostate and Skin Cancer rates soar in the UK

The Office of National Statistics has just published figures on the most common cancers.

Over the nine-year period to 2000, prostate cancer rose 62 per cent, breast cancer by 8 per cent, while melanoma increased 64 per cent in men and 45 per cent in women.

The editor of Icon magazine, Chris Woollams, comments that all the rapidly growing cancers are oestrogen driven.  He, and many other scientists believe the main reason these cancers are growing is the plethora of chemicals surrounding us that mimic the action of oestrogen once in our bloodstreams.  This has been understood for over 20 years yet the Government takes no action.  Only recently, the WWF report showed heavy levels of toxins in our bodies, confirming the threat reported by the Royal Commission in 2002.
