Toxic - what's really in our toiletries?

The adverts on TV and in magazines for family toiletries always seem to portray an image of cleanliness and safety.  Cute little babies are seen splashing about in masses of bubbles, smiling children appear cleaning their teeth with yummy toothpastes, young women appear with long, shiny hair after washing it with the latest herbal shampoo.  I'm sure you could think of many more examples but do you take any notice of them?  Do you spot the products you've seen on the supermarket shelves and think that you must try them as they looked good in the advert?  You probably wouldn't admit it, but most of us are influenced by these ads in some way. Advertisers know just how effective these familiar images can be in increasing sales and we fall for it hook, line and sinker!

This has become so effective that we rarely question the safety of the products we buy to keep ourselves and our family clean.  Did you realise that the responsibility is not on the manufacturers to prove that their chemicals are "safe" and "non-toxic"? Instead, it is left to the government regulating bodies to prove that they are unsafe. Time and time again expert evidence supplied by some of the best independent scientists in the world is disputed by industry "experts", with vast amounts of money behind them, to discredit the work done by decent, honest scientists providing factual and scientific evidence of the long term, ongoing effects of these chemicals.  Look how long it took scientists to persuade the world that cigarette smoke damaged health - over 30 years, yet tobacco is still on sale!

Does this shock you?  Well it should!  This is not new.  Articles are appearing more and more regularly in the newspapers about how common chemicals are causing cancers and other immune system diseases like asthma and eczema.  Wildlife, too have shown some alarming changes where they have been found to change sex or become sterile. When will we wake up and accept the truth?  If you have a family with young children, you owe it to them to check this out for yourself and avoid anything that could possibly harm their health.

Over 884 chemicals used in personal care products and cosmetics have been identified as being harmful to health, many of which can affect the unborn child, too.  Here is a list of common ingredients found in products some of you probably still use each day:

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate(SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) - These are found in shampoos, hair conditioners, toothpastes, body washes etc. They are strong detergents also used in garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers, which can cause irritation and permanent damage to the eyes (especially in children), skin rashes, hair loss, flaking skin and mouth ulceration. When combined with other ingredients, they can form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic and can easily pass through the skin into the bloodstream, accumulating in the heart, lungs, liver and brain.

Propylene Glycol and Polyethelene Glycol (PEG) - Material Safety Data Sheets warn users to avoid skin contact with this substance, and protective clothing should be worn at all times.  It is the cosmetic form of mineral oil found in automatic brake fluid, hydraulic fluid and industrial antifreeze, yet is also found in make-up, hair and skin care products, deodorants, and aftershave. The related agent, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) that is found mainly in skin cleansers is a caustic used in industry to dissolve grease. Both of these are strong skin irritants and can cause contact dermatitis, liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

Diethanolamine (DEA); Triethanolamine (TEA); Monoethanolamine (MEA) - These chemicals are commonly found in children's bubble baths. When combined with nitrosamines, these substances can become carcinogenic. They are able to pass directly into the blood stream and, in studies, have been found to induce cancer of the liver and kidneys in mice.

Talc - This is found in baby powders, face powders, and body powders as well as some contraceptives such as condoms.  Talc is a known carcinogen and is a major cause of ovarian cancer when used in the genital area.  It can be harmful if inhaled as it can lodge in the lungs, causing respiratory disorders.

Sodium Fluoride - This is found in toothpaste. It can cause permanent discolouration of second teeth, called Fluorosis, especially when ingested as a baby. It is also an active component of rat poison. In the US, it is a legal requirement to display the following warning in bold faced capitals on the boxes of all toothpastes containing Fluoride:

"WARNING: KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN UNDER SIX YEARS OF AGE.  IN CASE OF ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE, SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE OR CONTACT A POISON CONTROL CENTER IMMEDIATELY."

Petrolatum & Mineral Oil - This is used industrially as a petroleum based grease component and is also known as liquid vaseline, mineral oil jelly, baby oil and paraffinum liquidum.  This substance strips the natural oils from the skin and forms an oily film over the skin, which prohibits the release of toxins.  It can also cause photosensitivity, chapping, dryness and premature ageing.

Lanolin - This is found in cosmetics and body lotions and also in nappy cream. Lanolin is a known skin sensitiser that can cause rashes. In tests, 50 – 60% of lanolin samples were found to be highly contaminated with organo-chlorine pesticides (used in sheepdip), which are known carcinogens.

When I first discovered this over four years ago, it seemed too horrific to believe - maybe that is how you are feeling right now.  I went straight to the bathroom and found these very chemicals listed on products I was using on myself and my children.  But something inside me made me investigate further and I was shocked to discover that scientists and toxicologists have known about this for decades.

Thankfully, my family are no longer exposed to these or any other potentially harmful chemicals in our toiletries or household cleaning products. It would seem irresponsible to allow my children to use them after all I've discovered. And I certainly do not wish to increase our chance of cancer, now affecting 2 in 5 of us, according to the latest statistics.

Those six chemicals mentioned above are just a small number in a long list.  More chemicals can be found on http://www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Toxins.html . If you would like a small leaflet, which can fit in a purse or wallet, listing even more, go to http://www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Leaflets/Toxins_Guide.pdf to print off pocket guides for yourself and a friend.

With Christmas fast approaching, please bear in mind what you have just read.  Do you normally buy fragranced toiletries for any member of your family, or friends?  If so, please check the labels carefully and consider what affect your gift may have on their health.

For safe alternatives, check out http://www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/UKStore or http://www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/EuroStore.  We shall be adding a Christmas gifts section, shortly. Also see the Exclusive Special Offers if you want to rid your bathroom of potentially harmful toxins in one go.

Onion Breath OK as It Fights Cancer

Researchers have known for some time that onions may help fight cancer, but a study in the US is believed to be the first to compare cancer-fighting abilities among commonly consumed onion varieties. It seems the stronger the onions the more likely they will inhibit cancer growth. So feel free to consume them and tell those that are troubled by your breath you are just on an anti-cancer programme. Shallots and onion varieties with the strongest flavour had the highest total antioxidant activity, an indication that they may have a stronger ability to destroy charged molecules called free radicals, an excess of which are thought to increase the risk of disease, particularly cancer.

Lower Blood Pressure - Another Benefit of Folic Acid

Folic acid possesses many benefits such as decreasing one's risk of colon cancer; lowering homocysteine levels associated with an increased risk of heart disease and strokes; affecting mood and the ability to think; and building stronger bones.

Increasing your intake of folic acid can reduce your risk of high blood pressure too, according to a new study unveiled during a special meeting of the American Heart Association recently in Chicago. Researchers found women who consumed more than 800 micrograms of folic acid through food and vitamin supplements lowered their risk of high blood pressure by almost a third compared to those who took in less than 200 micrograms a day. More than 150,000 women in two age groups were studied to see if there was a link between the risk of high blood pressure and their folic acid intake. Women aged 26-46 who consumed more than 800 micrograms of folate daily showed the most dramatic decrease in hypertension risk. Older women in the 43-70 age bracket who ate the most folate also cut their risk of high blood pressure, but by a more modest 13 percent.

The Nine Triggers of Heart Attacks
How likely are you to have a heart attack?  Researchers have pin-pointed nine factors that will determine your risk. Top of the pile is cigarette smoking.  Smoking 6 to 10 cigarettes a day doubles your risk, the risk quadruples if you smoke 20 a day, while those who smoke 40 or more a day have a nine-fold risk of an attack.

The other major marker was an abnormal ratio of apolipoprotein A to apolipoprotein B, which is considered a more sensitive indicator than high- and low-density lipoprotein.  This, together with smoking, accounted for two-thirds of total risk.

Other factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, abdominal obesity, low daily fruit and vegetable consumption, a lack of exercise and stress.

PROSTATE:  Flaxseed can reverse a pre-cancerous condition
There could also be some good news for men who've reached that stage in life when thoughts turn to the prostate.  A combination of flaxseed and a low-fat diet can slow the spread of benign prostatic tissue, and may even reverse pre-cancerous changes in prostate tissue.

Researchers tested the combination therapy on a group of 15 men, who possibly had early-stage prostate cancer according to biopsy.  They were put on a low-fat diet, and supplemented with 30 g daily of ground flaxseeds.  Of these, two did not need a repeat biopsy because PSA levels had normalised, while only one of the other 13 had possible prostate cancer on follow-up biopsy.

It's been suggested that ground flaxseed may be safer than flaxseed oil, although patients may develop vitamin B6 deficiency if not taken in other sources.

Useful Websites

At Healthy Choices, we frequently come across websites which we believe you may find interesting and useful.  Here are 3 sites:

NiBal Survey on Dieting

http://www.nibalprogramme.ukhq.co.uk/Questionnaire.html

If you checked out http://www.nibalprogramme.com which was mentioned in last month's e-news, you may be interested in a survey that NiBal is doing.  It is meant for anyone who has ever been on a diet and will help NiBal develop new programmes to meet the needs of dieters in the 21st Century. The survey is totally confidential and no personal details are required.  Everyone who fills in the short survey has the option of entering a prize draw to win a NiBal Nutrient Balancing Course by e-mail, worth £16.50.

Vitalia Health

www.innertalk.co.uk

Vitalia Health is a company which helps people to take responsibilty for their health by offering programmes and products that educate and promote well-being.  They include an extensive range of CDs which can help with self-esteem, insomnia, addiction, bereavement and many more situations, simply by being played in the background. The website contains some compelling testimonials from people who have benefited from these CDs which contain music or nature sounds.

Google Desktop Search Engine

http://www.mercola.com/2004/nov/3/google_desktop_search.htm

Some of you may receive the twice weekly e-news from Dr Mercola on an amazing number of health issues from around the world.  This week he mentioned a new, free service from Google that has nothing to do with health but which you may find useful to download to your computer.  Dr. Mercola explains it very well on the link above, so do take a look.  We  have downloaded this service and it is brilliant at finding files on the computer in the same style as searching for a website on the internet. Once downloaded, the programme searches through all your files and catalogues them in the same way as "spiders" trawl the world wide web to catalogue websites.  I think one of the most amazing parts of this service is that it is free.

There will be more sites listed next month.  If you have come across any websites which you feel would be of benefit to subscribers of Healthy Choices E-News, please e-mail healthychoices@ecoworld.co.uk with the details and we’ll check them out for future issues.
