Helping you
make healthy choices for life
October 2004
Welcome
to this month's edition of the Healthy Choices newsletter
and a special welcome to all our new subscribers.
Each
month we feature up-to-date information on health issues that may affect you
and your family. We also look at one of
our many product ranges; provide details of our latest special offers plus
give you a chance to win one of the products from our toxin-free range.
Our
featured product range is the Dental Care range which has made
a huge difference to my own dental health since I started using them in
2000. My recent visit to the dentist confirms this and my dentist is very
pleased that I have not required any treatment for a few years, now. If
you have not tried them yet, you will find out how to make great savings on the
dental care products in our Special Offers section.
Do
remember to enter our competition this month if you live in the UK or
Europe. This month's prize is safe for all the family including
your pets.
I
hope you find this month's newsletter interesting and informative. If you
have any suggestions for future articles, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Aloe Vera - a truly amazing plant
Aloe vera has been known to benefit health for
thousands of years. The first recorded
use of this plant, a member of the lily family, was around 1500BC in
Mesopotamia. The Egyptians and Greeks
have also recorded its use as a treatment for burns, wounds, and infections.
There are 200 varieties of Aloe but only four
have nutritional benefit. It grows in
dry areas in Africa, Asia, America and Europe.
Aloe vera has undergone much research over the years which has been able
to prove the amazing health benefits of this cactus-like plant. Over 200 active compounds have been
identified including a range of vitamins and minerals, enzymes, essential fatty
acids and polysaccharides.
Aloe vera is able to modify the immune system
which may help prevent immune system diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or
Lupus Erythematosus. Also, with a strengthened immune system, our bodies are
better equipped to deal with the hundreds of pre-cancerous cells we manufacture
each day.
In the U.S, Aloe vera has been approved for the
treatment of soft tissue cancers in animals and also for the treatment of
leukaemia in cats. Studies have shown
that the large polysaccharide molecules from Aloe vera produce Tumour Necrosis
Factor, which enables the body to shut off the blood supply to tumours. This offers great potential for the
treatment of human cancer in the future and it is already being used to treat
AIDS in Europe.
Aloe vera has also been shown to have
anti-inflammatory properties (salicylic acid) which may help conditions such as
arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions eg Crohn’s Disease. People suffering with gastric reflux have
also found benefit from sipping Aloe vera juice as it quickly reduces the
burning sensation by neutralising the acid.
Known as an adaptogen, Aloe vera is able to
recognise the differing needs of the body.
It has been found to lower high blood pressure, yet is also able to
increase low blood pressure to normal levels.
Those suffering with constipation find that Aloe vera helps to increase
bowel movements, yet those with diarrhoea find that it reduces them.
Diabetics have also found that their blood sugar
levels are better controlled when taking Aloe vera, therefore reducing insulin
or hypoglycaemic medication. This is
due to the polysaccharides in Aloe vera which allow insulin to bind more
efficiently to its receptor sites in the body.
Other benefits include
improved blood and lymph circulation which help to remove toxins more
efficiently from the body, and improved wound healing with less incidence of
infection.
There are now many
suppliers of Aloe vera but they vary in the quality of their product. It
is therefore important to find a high quality product to receive maximum
benefit. The liquid preparation should
contain at least 90% Aloe juice, be totally organic, be free of preservatives
or artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners and not be diluted with
water.
Neways have developed a
high quality Aloe vera preparation called NewVera. It is a
comprehensive and powerful blend of Aloe vera barbadensis, the most beneficial
of all types of Aloe vera, and is grown in organic soil rich in nutrients,
carefully harvested and immediately refrigerated to maintain freshness. NewVera contains 92% Aloe
juice plus other natural herbal extracts to support the body’s defence
mechanisms. It contains no artificial ingredients but instead has the added
benefits of natural honey, maté, fennel, bilberry, angelica, orange, lemon,
grape skin and grape seed teas. This
makes NewVera one of the best tasting and nutritious Aloe vera
drinks available on the market.
If you would like to try NewVera,
take a look at this month’s Special Offer for a great saving on the normal
price.

Teflon Chemicals are a Threat to Health
The coating on non-stick pans used in millions of kitchens
throughout the world has been linked to birth defects in humans and to the
deaths of pets. Chemical firms face claims that perfluorinated organic
chemicals, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is in Teflon and oil-
and water-resistant coatings, are a health threat. Du Pont, which makes Teflon,
has to answer accusations in the United States that it had evidence about
dangers posed by PFOA but deliberately and illegally kept it secret. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency says that Du Pont concealed its own 1981
research showing that its pregnant workers were passing the chemical to their
unborn children. In addition, in 1991, it failed to report evidence that the
chemical had contaminated the water supply to 12,000 people. The dangers of
these chemicals are well established.

UK Drinking Water Tainted With Prozac
A report by the UK government's environment watchdog,
Environmental Agency, found Prozac, an antidepressant drug, was building
up in river systems and groundwater used for drinking supplies. The exact
quantity of Prozac in the drinking water was unknown, but the report concluded
Prozac could be potentially toxic in the water table. Experts say that Prozac finds its way into rivers and water
systems from treated sewage water, and some believe the drugs could affect
reproductive ability. To avoid other contaminants in water, you need to filter
your water. Reverse Osmosis is the safest and most effective way for
domestic use. See http://www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Reverse_Osmosis.html for

Do Calories Really Count?
A Penn State professor recently told a group of experts studying
the worldwide obesity epidemic, "Calories count, no matter what you read
in the press." The calories you consume must be used or they will be
stored as body fat. The body does not waste energy, no matter what its source.
When people are placed on carefully controlled calorie-restricted diets, the
amount of fat in the diet, whether it's 25 or 45 percent of total calories, has
little effect on weight loss.
In other words, those who say they can eat as much as they want
(of protein and fat, for example) and lose weight as long as they avoid certain
kinds of foods (carbohydrates, for example) are really eating less (that is,
fewer calories) than they did before. The key, this expert says, is satiety and
the many characteristics of foods that affect it:
·
The look,
taste and feel in your mouth
·
The amount
of chewing required
·
The
nutrients they contain
·
How densely
packed the calories are
·
The volume
of food consumed

Dyslexia Transformation with Wheat-Free Diet
The Headmaster of Nunnykirk School in Northumberland,
one of five schools in the UK devoted to dyslexia, decided to remove wheat from
the diet of his pupils. This came about
after one of his students was advised by his GP to remove wheat from his diet
after a bout of food poisoning. This 12 year old pupil with severe dyslexia
improved with his reading by 18 months in just a few weeks. He continued to improve in the following
months by almost four years which was just below the expected reading age for a
12 year old.
After six months, 17 of the 22 day students had made a year’s
progress in their reading. Eleven of the 12 boarders made more than a
year’s progress, two of them making over three year’s progress in that
time. Teachers at the school have also
noticed that the children are more calm and alert, with improved self-esteem.

Sensitivity
Gone!
For
many years I have been suffering from receding gums and sensitive teeth where
the roots are becoming exposed. I have had several treatments of sensitive
cementum to relieve the pain but have not been very successful. I tried the Radiance
Toothpaste and Eliminator Mouthwash and within 10
days I did not feel like the same person. I no longer have sensitivity to hot
or cold on my teeth.

No
more Mouth Ulcers
For
many years, I suffered with problems in my mouth – bleeding gums, sensitive
teeth and mouth ulcers. In January 2000 I started using Radiance
Toothpaste and Eliminator Mouthwash. Within a week of
using them, the sensitivity had almost disappeared and my gums had stopped
bleeding when I cleaned my teeth.
At my
six monthly check with the dentist, I was told my mouth was in excellent health
and I only need to visit for dental and hygiene checks on a six monthly basis
from now on.
I am
absolutely delighted with this result and should also add I have not had a
mouth ulcer since January 2000.

For
anyone who is battling with weight control, you are not alone. At any one
time, 13 million people in the UK are on diets to lose weight. This is a world
wide problem which our governments are very concerned about. NiBal

programme to address this problem. The programme offers a course to help you
understand about food and digestion and provides a computer programme to use
daily to work out your calorific needs. You simply input your expected
daily activity such as shopping, housework, walking etc and the hours or
minutes you are likely to spend doing these activities, and the programme will
work out the number of calories and nutrients you will require to lose weight,
gain weight or maintain weight. This programme is currently only available in
the UK but will be extended worldwide soon.
